Resolutions Revisited

I'm still Christmas-ing up north for a few more days, so I thought I would re-post my article from this time last year. I am happy to say that indeed I did keep all of my resolutions from this list! How did you do? ;)

Resolutions, Shmesolutions...

"It's dangerous for a perfectionist to make New Year's Resolutions--we're the ones who go to the gym on January 2nd decked out in brand-new workout gear but are never to be seen again by the end of the month. We go into it with good intentions, we just get overwhelmed trying to maintain these lifestyle changes, well, perfectly.

On that note, a few years ago I decided to stop making resolutions. It worked for a while, but it's very un-perfectionist-like to not do something that everyone else is doing, so I took a different approach to the resolution issue. My new list of resolutions each year is made up of intentions that I should have no trouble keeping. It goes a little something like this:

1. This year I will not eat escargot.
2. This year I will not go bungee jumping or cliff diving.
3. This year I will not join an ice hockey team.
4. This year I will not run for president.

I should probably add "voluntarily" to the end of each of those, but I think you get the picture.

There you go--it's a no-fail list, and at the end of the year I can look back with pride and say, indeed, I kept all of my resolutions!

What about you? What's on your list this year?"

I remember laughing at this last year. Great list! I don't make resolutions, either. The only one I've ever kept is the one I made in the 4th grade to always wear my seatbelt. So I think I'll just make a list like yours:
1. This year I will not run a marathon.
2. This year I will not watch the movie The Hulk (worst movie ever).
3. This year I will not visit Iran.
4. This year I will not eat raw oysters.
There! I feel better already. Thanks, Rachel!

1. This year I will not remember to write 2010 on my checks for at least the first 3 months.

2. This year I will not stress out about working out...it's totally non-productive.

3. This year I will not go on a diet. Diets suck.

4. This year I will not obligate myself to do anything at the expense of my family...they come first. (This is actually a tough one for me. It usually involves saying "No" to flattering opportunities.")

One of my favorite quotes goes something like this - it's not the question of if you still have problems - it's the question of having the SAME problems. For me, each year, my resolutions look about the same as the year before. Maybe this year, I will also write some I know I can keep.

1. I will not learn Mandarin.
2. I will love most of my family most of the time. :)

3. I will enjoy the sunshine and clouds.

Donna, I really liked your last resolution, but I am looking for ways to actually achieve it - I struggle with that one too. Does anyone have any great ideas for that?
